    Halloween night

Hello, my name is Lexi Thompson; I am a grade twelve student at Brockville Collegiate Institute (B.C.I). I am a member of « Student Council », a player on our soccer team and in our Link Crew.

    What is Link Crew?

When you are in grade nine, you are probably scared; it’s a new school, with new students, and new teachers- it can be scary!

That is why Link Crew was invented! There are Link Leaders (gr.12) who are there as role models and Linkers (gr.9), new students who might need help.

The Link Crew class does different events like orientation where we help the students acclimate: get to know that layout of the building, what teachers like and don’t like, and other helpful hints.

Each Link Leader has a partner and each pair of partners has a ‘Crew’, which are 5-9 gr.9 students. In the Crew, we become friends and play lots of games like Ramnation Day (A fun competition to welcome the new students), Halloween Haunt, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

It’s a fun way to help acclimate new students, meet new friends and make high school a lot more fun!

    Rural Settlements

Rural areas are characterized by low population density and a dispersed population distribution pattern. The majority of Canada’s rural settlements occur in The Mixedwood Plains Ecozone and The Prairie Ecozone, outside of the cities and towns. Some of the resources typically found in these areas/settlements are: agriculture, commercial fishing, forestry, mining/energy production, and recreational activities/pastimes. The kind of resources found in an area, the methods of travel available during settlement, and government policies are all some factors that explain why people settle/settled in certain rural areas.

Three rural settlement patterns in Canada are: The Long Lots of Quebec, The Concession System of Southern Ontario, and The Section System of the Prairies. In The Long Lots of Southern Quebec the agriculture resources attract people. This area was settled before the development of roads and railways, so transportation was by boat, which resulted in the long lot pattern of settlement. It also was settled long before a survey system was installed.

The Concession System of Southern Ontario had agriculture resources similar to those in The Long Lots of Southern Quebec, so people were attracted there as well. However, unlike The Long Lots, roads were the main forms of transportation, not boats. Major settlement in The Concession System occurred after the concession survey system was installed

    .
The Section System of the Prairies had rather low amounts of rainfall, which resulted in bigger farms being needed, and they settled around long roads. This pattern was surveyed before major settlement occurred. Surveyors, because of this, used the section system, a very simple survey system used rather often in many areas in the states.

In conclusion, rural areas are sections/patterns, with low population density and dispersed population distribution patterns. Most also have good agricultural resources, such as The Long Lots of Southern Quebec and The Concession System of Southern Ontario. The transportation methods available during settlement though greatly vary, as does the role played by government policy.

There are three settlement patterns in Canada, long lot of southern Quebec, concession system of southern Ontario and the section system of the prairies

In the long lot of southern Quebec there was good farm land and easy access to water. In the summer they travel by boat and in the winter by sled. After the lot were fill in the front row they would add another row.

In the concession system of southern Ontario, there was good farm land and roads were staring to be built. The lot given to the people was approximately two kilometer apart.

In the section system of the prairies they also had good farm land and road were built and the lot the people were given were 64 hectare in size and could be split into 4 quarter sections.

In closing, the settle supported the farming communities, the government policy determined the nature of the settlement pattern. Canada was settle from east cost to west cost.

The settlement in Canada can be divided into two different categories, rural and urban. Rural is outside cities and towns, also rural is characterized by the low population.

The rich agricultural attract people the settlement on farms along the St Lawrence River. For people who live on the river it’s easier to transport items from the farms. The farms are in a narrow pattern that stretch back from the river. The most popular transportation was by boat or in the water, sled over the St. Lawrence River or southern Quebec. The region of southern Quebec is very distinctive appearance. Taxes were based on how much frontage was along the river.

In general people tend to congregate around a source of fresh water because it’s necessary for our survival. People also like to live near one along and that’s how cities are formed. Farmers farm in the rural areas, simply because there’s more room and you can’t farm in the city.

Before the 1800 the settlement the main source of transportation was by the rivers and lakes. As time progressed railroads and roads were built. Then technology advanced you can live anywhere and still get anywhere. They made the concessions straight because it is easy to divide and easy to build roads. They made blocks that were on areas of 94 squared kilometers which is very large. They can have more crops which will provide more food.

As a conclusion, Canada has three settlement patterns for farming. The patterns are irregular and are adapted to their environment. They have the most agriculture, which makes the country one of the strongest world agriculture.

We will be talking about the kind of resources found in these 3 areas, transportation and the role played by government policy.

The rural settlement is the rich agricultural resources of the southern Quebec attracted people to settle on the farms along the shores of the St. Lawrence. Since people had to have access to water for transportation, each farm was built with a relatively small frontage along the St. Lawrence river the settlement patent to the shape of many narrow farm lots that stretches back long distance of the river. The settlement pattern in southern Quebec took the farm of long 100. When all the river lots had been settle second row of the long lots was settle along a road parallel to the river. The long lot rural settlement.

The prairies were surveyed before major settlement occurred. Surveyors used the section system a very simple survey system that had been used in many areas of the United States. The rural settlement pattern of the southern prairies was determined by the section system. Pioneer families settled on farms that were spread out long roads boarding sections and quarter sections. The section system was originally developed for the American mid-west where rainfall was substantially greater than in many areas of the Canadian prairies.

The rich agricultural resources similar to those in southern Quebec attracted people who settled on farms in southern Ontario. The use roads instead of water ways were the transportation routes for settlers. Rural settlement patterns were influenced by the presence of rou rather than water place. There was a major settlement that shows of southern Ontario occurred after the confession survey system that had been put in place.

Rural area is country, outside towns and cities. Have a low population density and usually have small settlements. In a rural area, natural resource consist of; trees for wood (woodstove, carpenter), water, farmland (growing crops, wheat, and vegetables), and wildlife (hunting).

There are three different patterns; the kind of resources found in the area, the transportation methods available at the time of settlement, and the role played by government policy.

Long lots of southern Quebec, in the area they have rich agriculture. The transportation method is by boat (by sled in winter). Farm lots are stretched to the river, along the roads lots go parallel to the river. The role the government is to make the lots narrow because the taxes were based on the amount of river frontage.

Concession system of Southern Ontario; they have rich agriculture and great resources. Roads and railways are the preferred methods of transportation; the government invested a lot by inventing the concession survey system and divided the townships into groups.

Section system of Southern Prairies. The prairies were surveyed before the major settlement occurred. The system was used in many areas. The transportation mainly used are roads.

In conclusion, we would prefer to live in the country because you have an easy access to better, natural resources.

  •        A rural area is an area where there is not a lot of people in the same area. The population is scattered all over the place. According to Making Connections Canada’s Geography, rural settlements occur outside cities and towns. Rural settlements are characterized by low population density and a dispersed population distribution pattern. Three important factors of a rural area are resources, transportation, and government that are found in the three patterns below.

The Long Lots of Southern Quebec has many resources, transportation, and government policies. There is great farmland and rich agricultural areas where people like to settle on. The transportation in this area is helpful for farmers. Roads, railways, and water ways allow farmers to transport their equipment and machinery. The St Lawrence River is near so the water ways are very busy. People who own land in this area prefer to have long narrow lots because the government bases the taxes off of the size of land.

The Concession System of Southern Ontario has many resources, ways of transportation, and government policies. There are many good agricultural areas here like Southern Ontario. Farmers like to settle here because of the nice, flat land. Roads and boats are the most used ways of transportation. The government sends surveyors to survey the land that people settle on and make them into blocks of land. The average size of a farm was usually 40-80 hectares.

For the Section system of the southern prairies, the Canada-united states government spent a lot of money to make a system that could divided into 36 different sections that could be divided into four different sections than into quarter sections about 64 hectares in size. The transportation in the southern prairies there are multiple ways of transportation such as high ways roads rail ways and seaways. Resources in the southern prairies are rich agricultural resources just like in southern Quebec. Flat land is better for farming and rich soil.

In Canada there are 3 different patterns of rural settlements. Resources, transportation and government policy have built these patterns. All of the rural areas have some differences such as their size and tax policy. But their common point is that they all have rich soil and they highly participate to Canada’s GDP. They are one of the richest parts of Canada.

     Essay

The three rural areas are long lots of southern Quebec, concession system of southern Ontario, and section system of southern prairies. Rural areas are of agricultural farming, rivers, and lakes. With owned policies by the people.

The long lots of southern Quebec offers agricultural farming along the St Lawrence River. The long lots are made of mostly farming because of their access to water. They also live along the river with transportation. The transportation the used was by boat and by sled in the winter. Later they developed roads and railways. Taxes were increased by the amount of land they owned.

The concession system of southern Ontario has agricultural road and lakes. They have agricultural land throughout the concession system. Settlement in the concession system became very popular after southern Ontario put the concession survey to use. People would live in places called a county. The townships and counties are an irregular size. The people would travel by boat then later car and train after a while the river wasn’t useful anymore and stopped travelling by boat.

The section system of southern prairies has had a switch in system running and has depended on the land for resources and transportation. They didn’t use water or boats for transportation because they had railways and roads. The people lived off the land, depending on the crops they grew and the house they built. They have had a switch in their way of running the system because they were afraid the U.S. government stealing their land, but they couldn’t go to lots way because families needed the in-land to harvest food for their large families.

The three rural areas share some relations but yet totally different by transportation, resources, and government. They didn’t always use boats, cars, trains, and other transportation. They used the same resources in different ways.
